| Aerator offers solution for de-compaction |
By Richard Rennie
The Gwazae Ground Probe aerator is providing a means for growers to aerate compacted soil without damaging the surface layer. While most aeration equipment involves heavy surface damage and a degree of ripping, the Gwazae operates with a probe that delivers compressed air below the soil surface.
Developed in the Bay of Plenty, the machine has built a strong following among kiwifruit growers who have suffered heavy compaction from trafficking under vines.
The machine operates on the principal of compressed air being injected via a ground probe that can be adjusted to variable depths from 300mm to 700mm with variable pressure from 60 to 150 PSI. The air burst shatters soil pans and compacted profiles, encouraging greater aeration, drainage and ultimately improving soil structure.
The ability of the machine to recharge its compression capacity quickly through an on-board compressor means productivity is maximised. The Gwazae can cover half a hectare per hour as a single probe model, and one hectare an hour in double probe configuration (use in Kiwifruit orchards).
The machine is capable of delivering not only compressed air, but also liquid fertiliser and lime solutions into the subsoil. Kiwifruit grower John Carson of Katikati reports good success in improving plant productivity and fruit set by using an injected solution of vermicast supplied by Wormtech Limited near Edgecumbe.
He says after 30 years of heavy trafficking along the vines soil surface was very dense and unable to withstand downpours, with high water runoff and poor root penetration.
Employing the Gwazae over the last six years has seen the soil improve in friability and earthworm populations increase, also reflecting improved vine health and productivity. His orchard has consistently delivered 8500 trays a hectare with fruit grading at 34 for the last 15 years, a good level for the region.
At present the machine is operated by contractors Ground Probe Aerators, of Tauranga who offer a nationwide service, including vineyard work in the South Island.
